What is Goso Monaka?
A crisp wafer shaped like Himeji Castle's main keep and stone walls, filled with lightly sweet azuki paste and chopped chestnut.
Goso Monaka is one Himeji shop's own sweet, not a general type of wagashi you will find all over Japan. It is made mainly from glutinous rice wafer, azuki beans, chestnut and sugar. You may also see it called “castle-shaped monaka”.
What the name means
五層
五層 (goso) means 'five tiers', after the five-tiered roof of the castle's main keep. It was first made in 1956 to pray for the success of the castle's great restoration.
